NICU staff

The team at Nepean Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are a dedicated, caring group of people. There are a number of professionals in a variety of roles caring and looking after the babies.

We have created this “who is looking after your baby” information sheet below to help you identify the person and their role in helping you and your baby.



Neonatologists

Are paediatricians with advanced training in the care of sick or premature newborn babies. The Neonatologist will be in overall charge of your baby's medical care.

Paediatricians

Are doctors trained in the care of infants and children.

Registrars

Are doctors who are learning the specialty of neonatology. They work on a roster, so you may meet different registrars on different days. There are many other medical specialists available around the clock should your baby need them.

Nurse Unit Manager

Is the senior nurse in charge of nursing personnel.

Neonatal Nurses

Have usually had further training in intensive care for newborn babies.

Ward Clerks

Help with the smooth running of the unit and will often be the people who answer the telephone when you call.

Radiographers

Take x-rays of the babies and may do ultrasound examinations of your baby if required.

Physiotherapist

Is available to assess and give advise about movement and development, chest care and any bone problems.

Hearing screeners

Will test your baby's hearing before she goes home.

Follow-up Coordinator

Arranges any appointments for your baby with the Growth & Development Clinic.

NIC Unit Secretaries

Help with important correspondence about your baby.

Clinical Nurse Consultant / Clinical Nurse Educator

Help with training nurses in specialized neonatal care.

Audit Oficer

Gathers important information as part of the NSW Health Department data collection on babies needing ventilation.

“Housekeeping” staff

Keep the unit clean and tidy.
